In January 2026, the American Petroleum Institute published the first edition of API Std 16FI for temporary high-pressure equipment used at hydraulic fracturing sites. This article outlines its scope and the implications for equipment documentation.

Equipment covered by the standard

API states that 16FI addresses temporary high-pressure equipment commonly referred to as frac iron, including piping, hoses, connections, manifolds and pressure-relief devices. It covers design, manufacturing, testing, inspection, installation and safe use.

Clearer procurement information

A high-pressure system includes several equipment types and interfaces. Procurement and maintenance records should identify equipment category, pressure rating, connection type, materials, inspection records and traceability markings consistently across suppliers, field teams and repair activities.

Boundary with fluid end products

Temporary high-pressure manifold equipment covered by 16FI is not the same product scope as a pump fluid end. Referencing this standard does not replace confirmation of the applicable standards, drawings and acceptance requirements for fluid ends or their components.

Editorial perspective

The new standard reflects continued attention to lifecycle records and interface management for high-pressure equipment at frac sites. Defining the product boundary and maintaining traceable technical files are practical foundations for reducing mismatch and maintenance risk.
